Hindupur Civic Chairperson's Spouse Held Over Matka
ANANTAPUR: Group rivalry within the YSRC in Hindupur Assembly segment has led to the arrest of Hindupur municipal chairperson D.N. Indraja’s husband Sreenivasulu, a YSRC leader from Hindupur town, on charges of organising matka gambling and selling liquor illegally from Karnataka.
Police detained Sreenivasulu along with four others on Monday and sent them for judicial remand on Tuesday.
Municipal chairperson Indraja and her husband belong to the group led by MLC and former Hindupur YSRC in-charge Md. Iqbal. They are opposed to the group led by APIIDC chairman Naveen Nischal. The party high command had changed party in-charge Iqbal following dissidence and also the murder of party leader C. Ramakrishna Reddy few months ago. In his place, YSRC appointed K. Deepika as party in-charge two months ago.
It is alleged the group led by Deepika is targeting leaders of the Iqbal group, using its influence with police. As a result, Sreenivasulu and his close aides have been arrested. Sources said Sreenivasulu has a history of cases against him for organising matka on a large scale in Hindupur town.
Speaking to media, Sreenivasulu charged that police have arrested him without producing any evidence. He alleged that when he had questioned the inspector, the latter said he is under pressure from ruling party leaders to do what they order or face transfer.
