Triangular contest leaves Mahbubnagar voters at crossroads
Mahabubnagar: Political campaigns have hit the fever pitch in the Mahbubnagar Assembly contest, with the BRS, BJP and Congress trying to canvass voters for their ‘strong’ candidates.
The BRS is confident of retaining the seat for a third consecutive time, banking on developmental works implemented by sitting MLA and excise minister V. Srinivas Goud, alongside welfare schemes introduced by the state government.
The Congress has named Yennam Srinivas Reddy, an ex-MLA, who won the 2009 elections in the constituency on a BJP ticket, albeit by a close margin of 250 votes.
The BJP has opted for A.P. Mithun Reddy, the son of former MP A.P. Jitender Reddy, who is also campaigning vigorously. Both the national parties are seeking to cash in on any anti-incumbency sentiment in the constituency. However, voters say the choice is not straightforward due to the candidates of other parties.
A voter, seeking anonymity, said: “Srinivas Goud did good work during his tenure but the atrocities, alleged extortion and land settlements reportedly committed by his close relatives, might cause damage to him during elections.”
When asked about the 24-hour power presently being supplied by the BRS and the alleged three-hour power supply remarks of TPCC chief A. Revanth Reddy, Chand Pasha, a resident of Veerannapeta, said, “We don't think that the Congress, if elected to power, would do something like that.”
Another voter, Akram, said he has decided to give a chance to another party. “We know the problems being faced by the people due to the high-handedness of a few individuals here,” he said.
