Hyderabad: Yet again, Telangana will have only one woman Parliamentarian out of the five women candidates who contested from the seat as only Ms Maloth Kavitha of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) from Mahbubabad won the seat.

Kavitha polled 4,61,150 votes from the rural constituency with Scheduled Tribes estimated to comprise 37.74 per cent and Scheduled Castes 12.88 per cent of its population.

The other women candidates — Ms D.K. Aruna, Ms Renuka Chowdary, and Ms K Kavitha — all lost the elections.

Ms Aruna, who defected from the Congress to the BJP and contested from Mahbubnagar, polled 3,33,573 votes. Ms Renuka Chowdhary, a former Union minister, polled 3,99,397 votes at Khammam, and Ms Kavitha 3,53,543 votes at Nizamabad.

In 2014, too, the state had only one woman MP: Ms Kavitha.

With fewer women candidates being fielded by political parties, the number of women in the Lok Sabha continues to hover in the single digit range.
