New Delhi: Joining the long list of leaders leaving the grand old party, Congress’ Tripura chief Pradyot Manikya Debbarman on Tuesday resigned, claiming that the “old guard has taken over the party, which was very sad”.

Mr Debbarman’s chief difference was over the NRC issue with senior Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro, who is the Congress in-charge of all Northeastern states. “I hope and wish the young guard are given more protection now that Rahul Gandhi is no longer there. The way I was treated by Mr Faleiro was not fair. The old guard has taken over the party and it is very sad,” he told this newspaper.

The scion of the Tripura royal family, however, said he was not joining any political party. “I have resigned from all posts of the Congress a few days ago. The party high command had asked me to compromise with a section of state leaders, but I told them it was not possible. Then they asked me to withdraw the litigation that I have filed for the introduction of NRC (National Register of Citizens) in Tripura, but I did not agree to it, too,” he said.

However, Mr Debbarman added that though he had resigned, “I am still with the party at heart”, keeping the option open for the high-command to step in an effect a change of mind.
