CM Edappadi K Palaniswami lays foundation stone for SIR at Krishnagiri

Chennai: As part of an initiative of the State government to give impetus to the economic growth in the northern parts of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday laid the foundation stone for setting up of a Special Investment Region (SIR) in northern Krishnagiri district to attract investments.

The foundation stone for the Rs 2,420 crore project was laid through video conferencing from the State Secretariat here. The SIR, according to the government, would be jointly developed by GMR Infrastructures Limited and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO) and would come up on 2,100 acre area in Denkanikottai and Shoolagiri taluks of Krishnagiri district.

According to an official release the GMR Krishnagiri SIR would have world class roads, drainage systems, water and sewage treatment plants, power and internet supply to attract investments. The project is expected to be completed in about seven to eight years. Once completed, the SIZ would attract investments to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore, besides generating employment opportunities to 60,000 people.

Senior officials of the State government including Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, besides GMR Group Chairman, G M Rao were present during the event.
