Nizamabad: In an unusual move, Gortha Rajender, former president of the Nizamabad District Sarpanches Forum, applied for MLA from the Assembly ticket in the Congress. He applied for an MLA seat at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Friday before joining the Congress. On August 26, he would formally join Congress in the presence of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge during a public meeting in Chevella.

Rajender formerly served as sarpanch of Argul village in Jakranpally mandal and was the district president of the Sarpanches Association. His wife Gorthe Padma is currently the Sarpanch of Argul village.

Rajender has previously worked in various roles for the Praja Rajyam and BRS. Gaddam Rajaram, also known as Argul Rajaram, was a Cabinet minister in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Gorthe Rajender began his political career after being inspired by Argul Rajaram. As president of the Sarpanches Association, he is well-known throughout the district. Rajender is a member of the dominating Munnurukapu community and is running for MLA from the politically important Armoor Assembly constituency.

Former MLA Eravathri Anil and TPCC working president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud both backed Rajender. Gortha Rajender, on the other hand, is optimistic that he will serve the people of Armoor with the blessings of former minister P. Sudarshan Reddy.
