HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday challenged Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao to tell his ‘CM friends’ not to celebrate Republic Day, on lines of his decision in the state, and show ‘courage’ by asking them to call for abolishing the office of the Governor.

State BJP chief Bandi Sanjay, addressing mediapersons after unfurling the National Flag, accused Chandrashekar Rao of insulting the country by cancelling celebrations and called for “deporting him from the country just for that”.

“In addition, he continuously insults the Governor, a woman. Is this the respect the BRS and its leader gives women?” he asked. Amid the political furore, a hashtag equating BRS to ‘BoycottRashtraSamithi’ began doing the rounds on the day.

BJP national vice-president D.K. Aruna criticised the BRS leaders’ comments against the Governor. “When there were no Covid restrictions at the BRS meeting in Khammam, how come they came into play for Republic Day celebrations in Hyderabad? And a BRS MLC who doesn’t know anything about politics or government has been making very objectionable comments on the Governor. I demand that this MLC be disqualified,” she said in a statement.
