KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader V. S. Achuthanandan have called upon the Telangana government to end the police action against the students and faculty members in the strife-torn University of Hyderabad (UoH).

“The University authorities and Telangana police should stop violence against the students,” Mr Chandy said. Mr Achuthanandan meanwhile has said that the Telangana government should intervene to ensure an end to police brutality against the agitating students and teachers.

The students belonging to Kerala have sought the intervention of Mr. Chandy and other political leaders in the state to bring an end to the distress of students in the campus.

“The situation has become unbearable as hostels are not having provision for giving enough food to students,” said a student who declined to reveal her identity on the fear of being targeted by the university authorities.

“Mr. Chandy should talk to his counterpart in Telangana to ensure the safety of the students from Kerala,” she said. “We have sent email messages to Mr. Chany seeking his help”, she added.

The Opposition leader should also intervene in the matter, said Mohammad from Thrissur whose daughter is a student in UoH. Around seven students from Kerala are amongst the 27 people in the custody of Telangana police.

Students believe that another 100 students including several from Kerala have been identified for further police action. “The campus looks as if it is under police occupation and we are scared of moving out from the hostel”, she said. Her hostel is 3 km away from main gate. “I don’t feel safe to cover that distance with so much police around,” she added.
