Kharge meets Siddaramaiah, but agenda remains a secret

BENGALURU: Amid intense speculation, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, held a one-on-one meeting with CM Siddaramaiah here on Saturday evidently to counsel the latter to steer clear of controversies.

Was it ‘big brother’ Mr Mallikarjun Kharge handing out advice to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has been in the eye of a string of controversies, or a meeting of great political significance?

The 30 minute-long meeting of these two leaders on Saturday sparked much speculation though Mr Kharge dismissed it saying it was to seek more funds from the state government for projects in Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

Speaking to DC, a senior leader in the CM’s camp disclosed that perhaps Mr Kharge, who was not embroiled in any controversy so far, wanted Mr Siddaramaiah to tread with caution as the row over his Hublot wristwatch and setting up of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) could have an adverse impact on the prospects of the party in five states going to polls next month.

Besides, the leader reportedly advised Mr Siddaramaiah to consult everyone who matter before arriving at a decision.  Emerging from the meeting, Mr Kharge spoke in defence on Mr Siddaramaiah on establishment of ACB but advised his party legislators to express their views on the issue only at the legislature party meeting.

“If our legislators’ have any problem with formation of ACB, it must be sorted out within the CLP and nowhere else. I do not believe that Mr Siddaramaiah's decision would have any impact on functioning of the Lokatyukta.

The Chief Minister has also assured that he is committed to strengthening the institution of Lokayukta by bringing in necessary amendments to the existing Lokayukta Act,” he added. 

Answering a question, Mr Kharge stated that he was a law abiding citizen. “Be it the report of Anwar Manipaddy or any other case, I will abide by law,” he added.
