Yellapur: The BJP’s Uttara Kannada MP, Anant Kumar Hegde, who has shown little involvement in party affairs, is back in action, campaigning for it in the Yellapur byelections to help it win the backing of his Brahmin community in the constituency.

Although a winning horse, Mr Hegde, who has represented Uttara Kannada constituency six times since 1996 except for one term in 1999, has always been  a loner of sorts, preferring to work alone. This time, however, he is working for Mr Shivaram Hebbar of the BJP, who returned to the party last week, after quitting it about two decades ago. He was once closely associated with the RSS and was even the Uttara Kannada district party president in the nineties.

“This is an important election for the party and Hegde has the responsibility of ensuring the victory of the BJP candidate in his constituency . Earlier he worked alone without caring much for party activities.

But  this election he is working to ensure Hebbar’s victory, as it will earn him some brownie points with the party too,” explained a senior BJP leader.
