Visakhapatnam: The YSR Congress leaders allege that the ruling Telugu Desam does not wish to conduct GVMC elections out of fear of defeat, and in order to provide MLAs with more avenues to indulge in corruption.

The district YSRC unit staged a protest against the TD government at the Gandhi statue near the GVMC office on Monday, as the government has not conducted GVMC elections, even though it is long overdue. It has been over five years since the term of the last general body of the GVMC ended.

Speaking at the meeting, YSRC leaders said, “The TD government's failures and their corruption activities have been making them stay away from the GVMC elections. The TD government has been ma-king the GVMC splurge money on various programmes, which have thrown the GVMC into debt of hundreds of crores of rup-ees. Due to the lack of corporators in the city, civic issues in the wards are piling up, as people don’t know whom they can approach.”

YSRC leaders Malla Vijay Prasad, Vamsikrishna Srinivas, Koyya Prasad Reddy, John Wesley and Tippala Nagireddy were present, among others, at the meeting.

TD violated poll code: Murthy Yadav

YSRC spokesperson P. Murthy Yadav alleged that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had violated the MLC poll code, by promising the youth an unemployment allowance.

“Mr Naidu discussed these issues in Amaravati to attract graduate voters, for the ongoing MLC    elections. This is clearly in violation of the election code. The TD government in its rule of nearly three-years has not released a single notification, nor has it doled out unemployment allowances. Now they just want to cash in on the situation by announcing these things. TD leaders are behind the ganja cultivation in the district. The tahsildar of Bheemili, who was recently caught by the officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, in his declaration said that he had committed all the wrongdoings that he has been accused of, under pressure from TD leader Paruchuri Bhaskara Rao, who is a close aide to HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao,” said Mr Murthy.
