Chennai: DMK president M. Karunanidhi’s health is improving with the infection coming down, his son M. K. Stalin said on Friday even as several leaders from various walks of life made a beeline for their Gopalapuram residence here to personally wish speedy recovery to the 95-year-old Dravidian patriarch.

“There is good improvement in the health of thalaivar (leader); the fever and infection are receding. Please do not believe the rumours being deliberately spread by mischief makers”, Stalin told reporters outside the house. He also posted tweets hailing his father, who entered his 50th year today as the DMK chief, as an “unshakeable force” who had converted tough challenges and terrible betrayals into glorious achievements.

A six-member team of medical specialists spent long time by Karunanidhi’s side in the morning assessing his health status. The doctors told Stalin that the fever had come down with the infection getting better. They said his father should continue to be under extreme care, including hospital-type attention round-the-clock, besides complete isolation from visitors to avoid contacting infection.

The good news of their Kalaignar’s gradual recovery was greeted with cheering by several admirers and DMK workers who had gathered outside the residence. Many of them had come from distant places across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states; of them, 85-year-old Rathnambal had come all alone by bus from his native Thirukkuvalai village in Tiruvarur district to personally convey her get-well wishes.
