Kozhikode: A get together of children who had cochlear implants and their parents under the Sruthitharangam project of the state government was held here on Sunday to share the experience.
Inaugurating the event, minister for social justice and panchayats MK Muneer said that the Cochlear implantation project was the most successful one envisaged by the state government. “Moves are afoot to set up Auto Acoustic Emission (AME) centres to assess the hearing and speaking disabilities of children soon after birth, at all the fourteen districts in the state”, he added. "It is a success of team work and even the central government had plans to replicate the project at the national level", he added.
The idea for the cochlear implant project was originally suggested by lyricist KJ Yesudas and the state took over the responsibility, he pointed out.
A total of 640 children had undergone cochlear implantation and the total amount the government spent was Rs 35 crore. More than 500 children and parents participated in the meeting. Mr Muneer also handed over prizes for best performing Cochlear implant centres. Kozhikode mayor VKC Mammadkoya presided over the function.
