In the grand theatre of Indian politics, the clothing of politicians has always been more than just a piece of fabric. Often a visual language, their clothing has been seen conveying identity, ideology and sometimes, rebellion.

The recent swearing-in ceremony for PM Modi's record third term as prime minister was yet another spectacle showing us the volume of the voice of fashion.

It would be safe to say that fashion in politics is moving forward from the days when politicians made statements in regional garbs or religious symbols to assert their identities. While that idea isn't completely disregarded, this year's ceremony saw a different narrative unfold which almost seemed like a deliberate attempt to blend in as Indians first. Jyothiraditya Scindia, known for his famous Rajasthani pagadis, opted for a subtle Moroccan fez-like cap reiterating a shift from regional stereotypes. Kangana Ranaut, in a cream and gold saree, exuded elegance while avoiding overt political affiliations which was a fresh approach as opposed to her otherwise outspoken persona off-screen. Chirag Paswan made a statement with his tricolour pocket square against the backdrop of his black bandhgala

Following this sartorial symphony of subtlety, one man chose to make a bold statement in the Lok Sabha. Rajesh Ranjan, better known as Pappu Yadav was seen entering the Lok sabha wearing a t-shirt with reneet written on it. His attire went beyond just fashion but was a direct message calling out the alleged misconduct and asking for a re-examination of NEET-UG as well as the special category status for Bihar. When politicians use the voice of fashion to be rebellious, it rarely fails to make an impact, which this time resonated with the frustration of many youngsters.

As he commenced the oath saying Bihar zindabad, he was later challenged with objections by his fellow MPs regarding his slogans, to which The Purina MP from Bihar responded by saying he was a six-term member and didn't require any guidance on the use of his words.

His acts undoubtedly caused controversy on social media, as the current demonstration filled the comments area of his tweets. The contrast between Yadav's t-shirt and Modi's attention to detail in his jacket illustrates how fashion's significance in politics is evolving. Every ensemble is a political tactic and a statement of personal conviction, from well-groomed looks to audacious declarations in cotton. Though some might argue that fashion has no place in politics, when used properly, it can be a potent instrument.
