Kolkata: Actor-turned-Trinamul Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty took anticipatory bail from the Barasat Court in North 24 Parganas of West Bengal on Thursday for allegedly beating a New Town restaurant owner who had moved the Calcutta High Court a day before claiming police inaction on the star politician.

Mr Chakraborty, who has been booked by the cops in a case on four bailable charges at the Techno City police station following a complaint by the restaurant owner Anisul Alam, appeared in person at the district court and surrendered himself. The Chandipur TMC MLA also prayed for the anticipatory bail which was granted by the judge against a personal bond of ₹2000.

During his visit to the court, he also held a meeting with district public prosecutor Shantamoy Basu, who is also the district TMC legal cell leader, at his chamber for nearly an hour. Other lawyers however protested this. Bhaskar Roy, president of the district bar association, argued that Mr Basu should not have met an undertrial accused like Mr Chakraborty.

On the other hand, Mr Basu pointed out that the TMC MLA met him in personal capacity as party leader. Mr Chakraborty however offered “no comments” citing his case “sub judice.”
