Hyderabad: Anuran Ghosh from Telangana secured the 77th rank with a percentile of 99.996614 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), results for which were announced on Tuesday.

Sixty-seven candidates bagged the top rank in medical entrance exam, a majority of them from Rajasthan, the National Testing Agency, which conducted the NEET, said. The top rankers include 14 girls. They topped with 99.997129 percentile.

The NTA said the 56.4 per cent of the candidates qualified the exam, which was conducted on May 5 at 4,750 different centres located in 571 cities across the country in 13 languages. The exam was also conducted in 14 cities outside India.

In all, 23,33,297 candidates appeared for the exam this year of whom 47,371 students from Telangana and 43,858 from Andhra Pradesh qualified. As many as 13,76,831 female candidates qualified as opposed to 10,29,154 males. Also, 18 transpersons cleared the exam this year. About 17.84 per cent more female candidates and 15.71 male candidates qualified this year in comparison with last year.

The NEET score is essential to secure a seat in the medical colleges. The cutoff varies every year and differs for different caste-based categories. The cut-off this year for the general and general-PH category candidates is said to be up from 720-137 last year to 720-164 this year.

The colleges also take into account other factors. The cut-off marks set the minimum score that candidates must achieve to be eligible for admission to MBBS and BDS courses. During the counselling process, candidates who meet or exceed the cut-off marks are considered for seat allotment.
