Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin’s loud remark, ‘thank god they are clad in black and not in saffron shirts’, in the Assembly on Tuesday raised the ire of the leader of the opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, who launched a broadside against the DMK saying that the party’s days were numbered and that in another nine months they would not only be out of power but would qualify to be the opposition party.

In a statement issued after walking out of the Assembly, Palaniswami said that if the Chief Minister’s remark had come when they were inside the House, he would have received a fitting reply from the party MLAs and accused Stalin of changing his stand on the BJP.

When the DMK was in the opposition, the party flew black balloons when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai and after they became the ruling party they carried a ‘white umbrella’ to welcome him, quite unashamedly, the AIADMK general secretary said.

The AIADMK had staged the walk out protesting against the alleged blacking out of their members in the Assembly television. They alleged that when a question was raised by an AIADMK member, they showed only the reply from the government after blacking out the questioner.

Palaniswami, in his statement, had a long list of misses by the Assembly Television on AIADMK members. He also challenged the Chief Minister to answer the question raised by his party members inside the House after allowing them to speak.

He said the allies of the DMK would vanish into thin air and that the AIADMK would return to power in the 2026 elections and it was not fair to ridicule the opposition members.

The AIADMK members had attended the Assembly proceedings dressed in black shirts to express their protest against the way they were treated in the House and not allowed to raise issues.
