Tirumala Rao takes charge as Andhra Pradesh DGP

Vijayawada: Senior IPS officer Dwaraka Tirumala Rao has assumed charge as the Director General of Police at the state police headquarters in Mangalagiri on Friday.

Later, he met Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat in Velagapudi in Amaravati. Among other things, he shared with the CM details about the murder of a young woman at Eepurupalem in Bapatla district. Naidu directed the DGP to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The Chief Minister informed the DGP that he would soon effect a purge in the state police department.

The first priority of the government, the CM said, was to protect people's property and lives. “Give top priority to the protection of women. Culprits in the Eepurupalem incident must get severe punishment, he stressed.

Before taking charge, Tirumala Rao along with his family visited the Goddess Kanaka Durga temple atop Indrakeeladri and had darshan.

At the police headquarters, Tirumala Rao was given a guard of honour. He took charge as DGP in the presence of his family members and senior police officials.

ADGs Shankha Brata Bagchi, K.L. Meena and Atul Singh, IGs Vineet Brijlal and Srikanth, DIGs Raja Kumari, Naveen Jetty and Mohan Rao and others greeted the new DGP.

Dwaraka Tirumala Rao is a 1989 batch IPS officer and currently tops the seniority list of state IPS cadre officers. His first posting was as Kurnool ASP. Later, he was ASP in Kamareddy and Dharmavaram. He was additional SP of Nizamabad district operations department.

After his promotion as SP, he worked in Anantapur, Kadapa and Medak districts as well as with the Vijayawada railway, CID and CBI departments. He served as DIG of special investigation branch in Anantapur and Hyderabad ranges. He also worked as IG in the Octopus and Counter Intelligence Cell.

Tirumala Rao had served as the police commissioner of Cyberabad before the bifurcation of the state. As the police commissioner of Vijayawada city after state division, he discharged duties as the RTC MD from June 2021 till now.
