Hyderabad: Although state government wings like GHMC, HMDA and TSIIC have set up ‘grandiose’ art works at various locations in the twin cities, a grim irony is that several of them have not been maintained to the required levels.

One such example where the upkeep has gone for a toss is the artistic installation near Vaikunta Mahaprasthanam at Jubilee Hills. What was supposed to depict a happy family, this piece of art went viral on social media after a portion of it was missing. The sculpture featuring a couple with two children was initially installed near the leather park on the old Mumbai highway. It was relocated to Jubilee Hills near the model crematorium around four years ago when a link road was being developed there. Since then it is near the Vaikunta Mahaprasthanam.

However, since a week, only the figure of the father is place as the portions featuring the mother and kids have been stolen, which were made of metal.

After it was shifted to Jubilee Hills, many called the sculpture scary as it was near a crematorium.

Speaking about the stolen portions, GHMC officials said that they have lodged a complaint with the police. That apart, many art works at Film Nagar, Punjagutta and Mettuguda are in bad shape.

In the ‘The Mark of Zorro’ inspired sculpture on the stretch connecting Filmnagar and Shaikpet, the metal swords are missing and only the fighters are seen. Even other classics' inspired sculptures on the same central median are in a poor state thereby defeating the beautification purpose.

The saving grace is that wood and stone crafted pieces that do not require maintenance and located on the Narsingi to Kokapet stretch are in good shape.
