Hyderabad: Comedian Daniel Fernandes, whose show was cancelled in Hyderabad on Friday, did not even apply for police permission or approached them.

On social media, Fernandes alleged that due to threats he received over calls, messages and emails, he was forced to reschedule the show which was supposed to be organised on June 29 at Jubilee Hills. In a video he uploaded on social media, he said that nobody was ready to guarantee his safety, besides the safety of his crew and audience, casting aspersions on the police and the government.

Jubilee Hills ACP P. Venkatagiri, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, clarified that neither did Fernandes, nor the management of Heart Cup Coffee, the venue, had applied for a permission with the police for organising the show.

“We were surprised to see this viral news, the person neither applied for a permission nor approached us seeking security,” the ACP said. He said that defaming the police department citing security concerns was inappropriate.

“If he had approached us we would have assessed the situation and taken a decision. He scheduled his show without permission, cancelled it himself and is blaming the authorities,” the ACP said.

Meanwhile, a resident from Hyderabad said that, projecting Hyderabad as an unsafe city in an attempt to defame the government was a wicked act. Fernandes, in an earlier video he had uploaded on social media, had cracked a joke about the Jain community whose members had purchased sheep from traders ahead of Bakrid. The joke had taken the internet by storm and received a severe backlash.

BJP Goshamahal MLA T. Raja Singh held out a threat to the comedian to cancel his show and warned him of the ire of BJP workers if he performed in Hyderabad.
