Visakhapatnam: The CPM has sounded the alarm over the potential environmental and social catastrophe that could unfold if hydropower projects are allowed to proceed in the Devarapalli and Saria Falls region. The party alleges that the dense forest area is being eyed for such projects, which could have devastating consequences for the local tribal communities and wildlife.

During a recent inspection of the area, CPM leaders and tribal residents staged a protest against a hydropower plant survey conducted by forest officials. The party claims the survey was carried out in collusion with representatives from Adani without the consent of the affected tribal communities.

CPM Anakapalle district secretary D. Venkanna and Devarapalli mandal secretary B.T. Dora expressed grave concern over the potential displacement of tribal populations and the destruction of wildlife habitats. They accused the government of prioritising corporate interests over the well-being of the people and the environment.

The party has called upon the tribal communities to resist any attempts to encroach upon their land and forest rights. They have also demanded that the government adhere to the provisions of the gram sabha PESA Act and Forest Rights Act to safeguard the interests of the affected communities.

The CPM has warned that the government will be held responsible for any adverse impacts of the proposed hydropower projects on the environment and the lives of the local people. The party has demanded a thorough assessment of the potential consequences and a transparent public consultation process before any decision is taken.
