Dalit nurse dies by suicide, boyfriend booked
A 27-year-old staff nurse from the Dalit community died by suicide at her hostel in Saroornagar early on Monday, allegedly after being cheated by her boyfriend and abused over her caste.;
Hyderabad:A 27-year-old staff nurse from the Dalit community died by suicide at her hostel in Saroornagar early on Monday, allegedly after being cheated by her boyfriend and abused over her caste. Police said the victim, D. Malleshwari, a native of Nalgonda district, was found dead by her roommate around 3.30 am at their hostel in Madhurapuri Colony.
She had reportedly locked herself in the bathroom, and when she did not respond, the police were alerted. Officers arrived at the scene, broke open the bathroom door and found her body.
According to Saroornagar station house officer V. Saidi Reddy, Malleshwari had been in a relationship with one Jana Reddy for the past six years. Ten days ago, Jana Reddy, who earlier promised to marry her, allegedly told her that his parents had rejected their marriage proposal because she was a Dalit. He also reportedly abused her by referring to her caste.
Deeply distressed, Malleshwari returned to her hostel and took the extreme step.
Police registered a case against Jana Reddy for abetment to suicide and criminalising sexual intercourse under the BNS, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination. Police said there were suspicions that the victim might have been pregnant.
