CID nabs Ghatkesar man in App fraud

Hyderabad:Telangana CID arrested a man accused of cheating several individuals of `22,69,262 by promoting a fake online investment scheme under the guise of reputable companies. The investigation was launched following a complaint from Robin Vinay Kumar Zaccheus and others, who alleged they were lured into the scam through WhatsApp groups. These groups shared links to a fraudulent app reportedly managed by a person named Vanditha.

According to CID, the accused, Thokala Madhusudan of Ghatkesar, initially invested `2.20 lakh in multiple installments and received small returns under the guise of daily earnings. He later discovered a “referral commission” scheme offering 11 per cent returns for onboarding new investors.

Seizing the opportunity, Madhusudan allegedly began recruiting new investors. Acting on instructions from group admin Vanditha, he organised promotional meetings at a hotel in Neredmet, where he falsely promised profits of 300 to 400 per cent within a short span. Believing his claims, several poor and unsuspecting individuals invested their savings, collectively amounting to over `22.69 lakh.

CID registered a case under Section 66-D of the IT Act, Sections 4 and 5 of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978, and Section 5 of the Telangana Depositors Protection Act. Investigators concluded that Madhusudan acted with mala fide intent, conducting meetings and manipulating people to invest for personal gain, causing heavy financial losses.

Investigation officer G. Venkateswarlu, DSP, EOW, and his team apprehended Madhusudan and remanded him to judicial custody on Tuesday. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the other accused, the press release added.

Vet duped of Rs 1.79 L in Army dog vaccination scam

Hyderabad:Cyber fraudsters duped a 27-year-old veterinary doctor of `1,79,998 by impersonating Indian Army personnel and claiming they needed vaccination for 90 Army dogs. “We received a complaint from the victim, who stated that he was contacted by a person inquiring about the vaccination procedure for 90 Army dogs,” said R.G. Siva Maruthi, ACP, city cyber crime unit (CCCU).

To gain the victim’s trust, the caller claimed that 50 per cent of the fee would be paid in advance via online transfer and the remaining amount would be settled after the vaccinations were administered. The fraudster also shared identity documents to appear credible. The victim, who had previously treated a few Army dogs, believed the claim.

Later, the fraudster told the victim that a senior Army official would contact him regarding the payment. Another caller instructed the victim to join a video call, citing the sensitive nature of the task involving Army dogs. “During the video call, the victim was guided to open his PhonePe app and navigate to the credit card bill payment section,” said ACP Maruthi. The fraudster then provided credit card details—the last four digits and the associated phone number—and instructed the victim to make a payment.

When the victim questioned why he was being asked to pay instead of receiving payment, he was assured it was part of a two-step verification process and that money would not be deducted. Trusting the explanation, the victim proceeded with the transaction. The fraudster then instructed him to repeat the process, but when the victim hesitated and raised concerns about the earlier payment, he was threatened with having his account hacked and blocked.

Fearing consequences, the victim complied and made a second payment, transferring a total of `1,79,998. The fraudster then promised that the entire amount would be refunded within five minutes and asked for transaction screenshots. The refund never came. The victim realised he had been duped and filed an online complaint.

Fraudsters are targeting veterinary and other professionals by impersonating Army personnel and fabricating stories related to Army dog vaccinations. Authorities urge the public not to make payments to unknown individuals claiming to be government or defence officials without verifying their credentials.
