Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday arrested Suraram inspector Akula Venkatesham for accepting a Rs 1 lakh bribe in the police station premises.
According to ACB officials, inspector Venkatesham was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from complainant Ratnakaram Raju, a resident of Gajularamaram. The bribe was demanded as a favour to allow Raju to carry out development works on his land in Gajularamaram. The officer had initially demanded Rs 5 lakh but settled for Rs 1 lakh as an advance. Earlier, the inspector had accepted Rs 2 lakh from the same complainant to avoid opening a history sheet against him.
In a separate incident, ACB officials arrested revenue inspector Sangam Durgaiah of Nyalkal mandal, Sangareddy district, for accepting a Rs 70,000 bribe from farmer Hippergone Mallappa. The bribe was for processing a cheque related to land assigned and acquired by the government for the National Investment and Manufacturing Zone at Zaheerabad.
Both officials were subjected to a chemical test, which confirmed the presence of bribe money on their fingers. The ACB seized the bribe amounts and arrested the officers, who were subsequently produced in court for judicial remand.
