Guwahati: The Assam government on Tuesday intensified its second-line of defence along the international border with Bangladesh.

Putting the police in Karimganj, Cachar, Dhubri and South Salmara-Mankachar districts on high alert, security sources said that ministry of home affairs has already alerted and restricted movement through the Integrated Check Posts at Sutarkandi in Assam, Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhaura in Tripura along with its counterparts in those states.

Pointing out that Border Security Forces (BSF) is already on high alert, security sources said that the state government is keeping a close watch on the evolving situation following violent unrest and subsequent resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Indicating that change of regime in Bangladesh may affect the security scenario of Assam, security sources said that they are keeping a close watch on activities of some top insurgent leaders who had very strong connections in Bangladesh but were shattered during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regime.

Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Borah has called on both Central and state governments to strengthen security measures in the light of escalating violence in neighboring Bangladesh.

Pointing out the proximity of Assam to Bangladesh with which the state shares border , Mr Borah emphasised the potential impact of the ongoing crisis in the neighbouring country on Assam and warned against further identity verification issues for its residents.

In a social media post, he stated, “Given the current situation in Bangladesh, I urge the governments of India and Assam to tighten security in the state. The Congress party doesn’t want the people of Assam to endure more identity verification cases, so I’m warning the BJP in advance.”
