Karnataka Governor Faces Threats, Gets Bulletproof Car

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar cited planned stone pelting by JDS and BJP supporters, at the Governor that might spark political tension in Karnataka.

Bengaluru: Some anti-social elements having allegiance to Janata Dal Secular (JDS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plan stone pelting at Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot with an intention to disturb law and order situation in the State, alleged Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and cited the planned stone pelting at the Governor has been the reason for him to be provided with a bulletproof car as a precautionary measure.

Speaking to media persons in Bengaluru on Friday, Shivakumar said “We have definite information on planned stone pelting at Governor and thereby bring a bad name to the State Government. So we are cautious and provide proper security for the Governor.” “We respect the Governor and his office. We do not want any confusion,” said the Deputy Chief Minister.

Sources said though the Governor has the privilege to use a bullet proof car but he refused it earlier. After Intelligence inputs of stone pelting, a bullet proof has been provided to the Governor.

It may be recalled here political tension flared up in the State after Thaawarchand Gehlot accorded grant of sanction to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in alleged irregularities in plot distribution to Parvathi, wife of Siddaramaiah by Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in Mysuru city.

The prosecution was accorded by Governor on August 16 and it was communicated to Chief Secretary to the State Government on August 17. Siddaramaiah moved the High Court of Karnataka and he has been granted interim relief by the High Court till August 29.

The action of the Governor drew widespread criticism in the State especially by Congress leaders and followers of Siddaramaiah. There were protests against the Governor’s accord for sanction to prosecute CM and effigies of the Governor were burnt in protest. Congress MLC Ivan D’Souza in a protest threatened to storm the office of Governor by Congress workers similar to the attack in Bangladesh.

While JDS and BJP leaders welcomed the prosecution sanction accorded by the Governor. On Thursday, BJP leaders staged State wide protests against the Congress party accusing its leaders of showing disrespect to the Governor.
