Visakhapatnam: Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam will celebrate the International Zebra Day on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon with a drawing competition for participants of all ages spotlighting Raja, the beloved zebra, who has become a cherished member of the zoo community.

Raja, along with his companion Rani, had won the hearts of zookeepers and visitors ever since they arrived in their lush enclosure from Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo in 2019. Visitors revelled in Raja and Rani's delightful antics through their playful interactions and unique behaviours.

Tragically, Rani passed away in 2023, leaving Raja to navigate life alone—a poignant reminder of the animal’s deep bonds amid the zoo's emotional landscape.

This longing for companionship extends to other animals as well. The female polar bear and male giraffe at IGZP also lack partners.

In light of this, IGZP curator G. Mangamma has reached out to the AP Forest Department, hoping to find new companions for the lonely hearts in the Vizag zoo through the Animal Exchange Programme.

Zookeeper Ram Murthy shares that despite his solitude, Raja finds joy in simple pleasures. He has a special affinity for rainy days, splashing around and enjoying the refreshing droplets on his glistening stripes. Carrots are Raja's favourite treat. Daily feeding sessions with Murthy has deepened their bond.
