Mumbai: Maharashtra will have to brace for incessant rains as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over the state over the next five days.

Isolated extremely heavy rain (over 20 cm) is also very likely over south Konkan and Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra on June 10, IMD has warned. It has also issued a red category warning for these areas which implies that authorities need to act to prevent emergencies due to flash floods or heavy rain.

The IMD has identified conducive conditions for the Southwest Monsoon to extend its reach into the central Arabian Sea, select areas of Maharashtra (including Mumbai) and Telangana within the next 2-3 days.

“Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai) and Telangana during next 2-3 days,” IMD said on X.

On late Saturday night and Sunday morning, Mumbai and its neighbouring areas received heavy rains bringing down the mercury levels and providing relief to residents from the hot and humid weather. In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, Mumbai received more than 60 mm of rainfall.

Thane and Palghar districts also experienced heavy rainfall, which led to severe waterlogging in various areas. There were reports of tree branches falling in some areas of Thane city, which received 37.06 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Sunday.

Due to the heavy showers, a part of the road in the Palghar district caved in, affecting traffic movement on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway early Sunday morning. Repair works, including a pipeline, were in progress when a portion of the road in Maljipada area of Palghar caved in due to heavy rains. Traffic came to a standstill and movement on both sides of the road was disrupted for more than four hours.

In Latur district, a 29-year-old man was killed after a signboard collapsed on him amid strong winds and rains. The accident occurred near Ahmedpur on Saturday evening.
