Indian Diaspora Represents Best of Country: President Murmu
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas had become more than just a celebration—it had evolved into a vital platform for engaging in dialogue, fostering collaborations, and strengthening the deep ties between India and its global community
Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora in carrying the values, ideals and culture to overseas while emphasizing the critical role they need to play in the country’s development journey toward becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ or Developed India by 2047.
Speaking to a vibrant gathering of overseas Indians, the President welcomed them to “their Bharat Bhumi,” expressing pride in their significant contributions across diverse fields worldwide.
Reflecting on the event’s purpose, President Murmu stated that the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas had become more than just a celebration—it had evolved into a vital platform for engaging in dialogue, fostering collaborations, and strengthening the deep ties between India and its global community. "While you may be physically distant, your connection with Bharat remains as strong as ever," she emphasised, expressing confidence that the diaspora’s continued engagement would contribute immensely to India’s progress.
The President outlined India’s vision for becoming a developed nation by the centenary of its independence in 2047, and emphasised that this mission could not be achieved without the active involvement of its diaspora.
“Your global presence gives you a unique perspective, and your achievements place you in a position to significantly contribute to the realization of a developed India,” she urged. Drawing from her own interactions with the diaspora during her overseas visits, she called upon them to actively participate in shaping India’s future.
Addressing the government’s efforts to support its overseas citizens, the President highlighted the simplification of consular services for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and the digitisation of processes for Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). She also mentioned initiatives like the “Know India Programme,” aimed at helping younger members of the diaspora rediscover their roots.
“The government has also launched missions like Operation Kaveri, Operation Ganga, and Operation Vande Bharat to assist distressed Indians abroad, ensuring that the homeland remains a pillar of support for its citizens, no matter where they reside,” she said.
President Murmu also paid tribute to the growing role of women, students, and youth among the Indian diaspora. She lauded the accomplishments of Indian women who continue to break barriers globally and highlighted the dynamism and creativity of India’s youth, who she believes will lead the country into a new era of progress.
Concluding her address, the President reaffirmed India’s vision of creating a global ecosystem based on the ancient philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'—the world is one family. She envisioned a future where India balances economic progress with social justice and environmental sustainability, offering a bright future for generations to come.
“Together, we can build a Viksit Bharat, a nation that stands tall on the global stage and continues to be a beacon of light for the world,” President Murmu concluded, sending a message of unity and hope.
The President extended special congratulations to Christine Kangaloo, the President of Trinidad and Tobago, who was conferred with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman 2025.
