Visakhapatnam: Small and medium industries minister Kondapalli Srinivas on Thursday checked out the medical camp in Zilla Parishad High School of Gurl village in Vizianagaram district, where people affected by diarrhoea in Gurl mandal are being treated.
He spoke to patients at the camp and held discussions with doctors and officials of the Panchayat Raj and Rural Water Supply departments.
District medical and health officer S. Bhaskar Rao provided the minister an update of support and care being made available at various medical camps and hospitals. 22 patients are being treated at the medical camp in ZP High School, 18 at Ghosha Hospital and seven in Cheepurupalli. Eighteen of the patients have been shifted to Vizianagaram Government General Hospital and three to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam for further care.
District officials informed Kondapalli Srinivas about the water samples collected from some borewells in Gurl mandal being contaminated. Following this, the minister ordered that until the source of contamination is found, water must be supplied to various villages through water tankers.
In a statement, the minister said the situation is being monitored closely for the past five days. The cause for contamination of water is waste being dumped into the upstream Champavathi River.
Kondapalli Srinivas said measures are being taken to identify villages that are dumping waste into the river. Measures will be taken to prevent such disposal, so that water supply is not contaminated, he stated.
