Vijayawada: A delegation of BJP leaders, led by state party chief and MP Duggubati Purandeswari, called on Union steel and heavy industries minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Delhi on Wednesday.

In a representation to the minister, the delegation sought takeover of RINL in Visakhapatnam and the Nagarnar Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh by the Steel Authority of India.

The BJP leaders said a takeover of the two steel plants would create a powerhouse for the steel industry. This would expedite the process of reaching the National Steel Policy 2017 targets and integrate and optimise the resources in the field. This would result in increased profitability and market expansion for SAIL, the delegation averred.

The merger would yield considerable cost savings in the interest rates and raw materials, resulting in higher profitability to the RINL Visakhapatnam plant, they claimed.

The steel minister promised to look into the issues and hold a meeting in two months’ time to take matters forward.

The delegation also comprised Union minister of state for steel Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, MP C.M. Ramesh and state BJP general secretary Kasi Viswanatha Raju.
