Telangana Governor appoints nine new University Vice Chancellors

Hyderabad: The state government on Friday announced the names of Vice Chancellors (VCs) for nine universities, after Governor Jishnu Dev Verma, who also serves as their Chancellor, approved the appointments.

Prof. Kumar Moglaram has been named Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Prof. Pratap Reddy of Kakatiya University, Warangal. Prof. G.N. Srinivas has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Palamuru University, Mahbubnagar.

Prof. Umesh Kumar will head the Satavahana University, Karimnagar, and Prof. Nityananda Rao the Telugu University, Hyderabad. Prof. Altaf Hussain has been selected as Vice Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda, and Prof. Yadagiri Rao will lead Telangana University, Nizamabad.

In the field of agricultural studies, Professor Aldas Janaiah has been appointed as Vice Chancellor for Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Hyderabad, while Prof. Raji Reddy will assume the role of Vice Chancellor at Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University.

Notably, the Vice Chancellor’s post at Telangana University had been vacant since the previous officeholder’s arrest in a corruption case by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. The appointments come after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's announcement in August, where he assured that the process for university leadership positions would be expedited.

The appointment process had been stalled since May 2024, when the terms of previous Vice Chancellors ended. In the interim, senior bureaucrats were appointed as in-charges to oversee the universities. The delay had sparked concerns across academic circles, but with Friday’s announcement, the state government has finally filled the leadership void.
