Eminent Agriculturist MS Swaminathan passed away at Chennai on September 28.

Dr. M.S. Swaminathan's passing is a profound loss that deeply saddens me, touching my professional and personal worlds. He wasn't just the celebrated "Father of Indian Agriculture," but a genuine role model and an inspiring figure to many like myself.

Steering the Green Revolution in India, Dr. Swaminathan's unparalleled commitment to agriculture didn't just rewrite the nation's farming narrative. He was instrumental in circumventing looming famines and lifting innumerable lives from the shackles of hunger. His illustrious contributions are underscored by honors like the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the World Food Prize, making his legacy an indomitable force in the Indian and global agricultural arenas. He often said - "Talk to the farmers," because he believed in learning from the grassroots and understanding their challenges firsthand.

The memory that stands out most vividly is when I was just 11. At a scientific gathering, my father, the Late Dr. U. Prasad Rao, a respected Rice Breeder & Geneticist, introduced me to him. What surprised me was that despite being surrounded by peers and luminaries, Dr. Swaminathan made a special effort to converse with a mere child like me. That gesture, seemingly small, spoke volumes about his character. It left an indelible impression about the importance of science, humility, inclusivity, and the eagerness to inspire the next generation.

As the years rolled on, our paths crossed several times. While at Bayer, I had the privilege of inviting him as a Speaker. Without hesitation, he agreed. And again, in 2019, during a Townhall meet at Chennai for East-West Seed India, he lent his esteemed presence. His age never seemed a barrier. Even in his 90s, he graciously agreed to address our organization, East-West Seed, albeit via video conference. His zeal to share knowledge was exemplary. I was privileged to meet him alongside our COO of East-West Seed Global, Dilip Rajan, at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in 2020.

Beyond my personal experiences, the tales I've heard from my father about Dr. Swaminathan's vision are countless. He often spoke of how Dr. Swaminathan dared to dream of a self-sufficient India. His partnership with the likes of Norman Borlaug led to monumental strides in agriculture, turning the tide against a looming famine in the 1960s.

Today, as I offer my heartfelt homage to Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, I'm profoundly reminded of his unwavering dedication, visionary outlook, and the myriad souls he impacted. Though he may have departed from our tangible realm, his legacy endures evergreen in the verdant fields he revolutionized and the countless hearts he moved. Farewell, sir. Your memory remains etched in our minds and hearts.
