Chennai: DMDK chief Vijayakanth on Sunday congratulated BJP president Amit Shah on his re-election as party president and said that his tenure would help realise the dreams of the party.

“I am quite confident that your clear vision, influence and tireless hard work would definitely help realise the dreams of every party worker of the BJP and leaders as well,” founder president of DMDK Vijayakanth said in his greeting to Shah.

Stating that he was delighted to learn of his re-election, he appreciated Shah’s contribution towards BJP’s growth at the national level and said the re-election was “God’s way” of appreciating him for his party work.

Mr Vijayakanth greeting Mr Shah gains significance as the BJP is making every attempt to retain its ally for the forthcoming state Assembly polls. DMDK, which had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election as part of the NDA, is much sought after now by parties, including DMK, People’s Welfare Front and the BJP, to take on the ruling AIADMK in the coming election.

BJP leaders had met Mr Vijayakanth several times to convince him to remain in their alliance while People’s Welfare Alliance leaders including MDMK chief Vaiko met him personally to invite him to join their fledging alternative front against Dravidian majors.

DMK chief M. Karunanidhi had also expressed his wish to have Mr Vijayakanth as part of their alliance. However, the DMDK chief has not yet divulged his plans over electoral alliances for the polls.

A senior DMDK leader termed Mr Vijayakanth’s greeting as a courtesy and nothing political about it.

“Captain has not decided on the alliance yet. Right now our focus is on the party conference to be held in Kancheepuram district next month. He will decide on the alliance after consulting the party cadres,” the leader said.
