GHMC polls: Over 80 tainted candidates in fray

Hyderabad: All major political parties have fielded tainted candidates in the GHMC elections. TRS candidate Mr M. Narasimha Rao contesting from B.N. Reddy Nagar has five criminal cases against him, while BJP candidate P. Venkata Ramana contesting from Shahalibanda has six cases. Over 80 candidates have criminal records.

This election has 50 per cent reservation for women, which means 75 candidates are women and many are first timers. Thus the number of tainted candidates in this election has not risen.

Congress party’s mayoral candidate Mr Vikram Goud son of former minister Mukesh Goud, contesting from Jambagh, is accused in 364-a (kidnapping) and 388 (extortion) rw 34 IPC case.

While former mayor Mohamed Majid Hussain contesting from Mehdipatnam has two cases registered (trespassing, assaulting a public servant and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), according to a report done by a city based election watchers group.

BJP candidate P. Venkata Ramana and MIM candidate Md Mustafa Ali, contesting from Shalibanda, have six cases registered against each of them mostly for communal rioting and all the cases are currently being probed by the SIT.

A few women having a criminal background with serious charges of cheating and forgery are MIM’s contestant, Tara Bai from Falaknuma and TRS candidate, K Meena from Gowlipura.

After withdrawal of nominations, 1,333 candidates remain in the fray and among them, 48 candidates have criminal records. The charges range from murder to theft, kidnapping, rioting, assaulting a public servant, domestic violence and gambling.

While Majlis Bachao Tehreek has three contestants with case history, CPI, CPM, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have one candidate each with criminal history.
