Visakhapatnam: AP unit BJP chief Daggubati Purandeswari underlined that the central government will declare Vijayawada floods a national disaster, provided the stipulated criteria are met.

She spoke to media on Wednesday at the BJP office in Visakhapatnam, where she arrived for her party’s ongoing membership enrolment drive.

Purandeswari declared that BJP stands in solidarity with the people of Vijayawada and will support the city’s flood-affected victims. She asserted that BJP workers are actively involved in taking up relief works in Vijayawada.

The state BJP chief said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu are in continuous communication with each other. “After knowing about the severity of the situation, the PM dispatched NDRF teams from the centre for taking up relief work in AP. The centre and the state governments are addressing the disaster,” she underlined.

When Deccan Chronicle asked Purandeswari whether Narendra Modi will be requested to declare Vijayawada floods a national disaster, she said, “If the Vijayawada floods meet the national disaster norms, the central government will declare these floods as a national disaster.”

The BJP chief reiterated that the centre has allocated Rs 12,000 crore for the Polavaram project and Rs 15,000 crore for Amaravati. She maintained that a railway zone could not be established in Visakhapatnam as the previous YSRC government failed to provide the required land. “The work will commence once the state government allocates the necessary land,” she stated.

Purandeswari maintained that efforts are being made to address the issues related to the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
