Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh home minister Vangalapudi Anita underlined the government's commitment to make the state a drug-free state by preventing drug addiction among youth.

Participating in a Sankalp programme in Vizianagaram district on Saturday, she pointed out that a specialised unit EAGLE (Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement) has been established under a director general-level officer to eradicate drugs, including their illegal transportation and sales. A toll-free number 1972 has been set up for citizens to report such activities confidentially.

The home minister pointed out that while drugs might offer temporary enjoyment, their regular use leads to impaired judgment and increased criminal behaviour. She asked students and youth to shun drugs, as they are destructive.

Speaking on the occasion, state MSME minister Kondapalli Srinivas called on students to utilise their free time for educational pursuits, rather than engaging with social media. He underscored the importance of anti-drug committees in colleges to help check drug abuse among youth.

MP Kalisetti Appalanaidu and Nellimarla MLA Lokam Naga Madhavi echoed similar sentiments. They commended the impactful presentations made during the Sankalp programme.

District SP Vakul Jindal disclosed that they have been raising awareness against drugs by reaching over 35,000 students through 900 seminars across 350 colleges. He said understanding the detrimental effects of drugs is crucial for those entering the medical profession.

TDP district president Kimidi Nagarjuna called for collective action against drug abuse, saying the societal demon must be confronted with unwavering determination.
