Vijayawada:The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday expressed displeasure over the alleged delay in granting promotions to a section of employees and questioned Chief Commissioner of State Taxes Ahmad Babu for not acting even after a departmental promotion committee meeting.

A single-judge bench headed by Justice Battu Devanand was hearing a petition filed by Government Employees Association general secretary M. Ramesh Kumar, who alleged that eligible employees were being denied promotions.

The court asked the state government and the chief secretary why no action had been taken against the official. It observed that eligible employees could not be denied promotions and sought an explanation for the delay.

The bench noted that directions had been issued in December last year regarding promotions, but no action had been taken so far. It also recalled that the same officer had earlier been cautioned in a contempt case.

The court said it would examine the allegations made against the officer and take an appropriate view based on available material.

It also made critical observations against a section of IAS officers, saying some were showing disregard for the law and court directions, and questioned the state government for failing to respond.

The matter was adjourned to Friday for further hearing.
