Andhra Pradesh: Lactating Woman Dies After Childbirth; Family Protests at PHC

Kakinada:  Vagala Alivelu Manga (23), a lactating woman from Alluri Seetharama Raju Metta village in T. Narasapuram mandal of Eluru district, died during the early hours of Tuesday.

In protest, her family members agitated in front of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at T. Narsapuram. According to sources, Manga gave birth to a male baby on July 27 at the Area Hospital in Jangareddygudem through a caesarean. She was discharged on August 5. Her health deteriorated in the early hours of Tuesday. Her family members rushed her to the T. Narsapuram PHC. Later, her family members shifted her to the Area Hospital in Chintalapudi, where doctors declared her dead.

Eluru district medical and health officer (DMHO) Dr. M. Nageswara Rao told this reporter Manga is said to have had a bout of epilepsy on Monday evening. However, her family members saw her fallen on the floor only in the early hours of Tuesday.

Family members took her to the PHC at T. Narsapuram. The DMHO said while Manga had been undergoing treatment, her family members insisted on taking her to Area Hospital in Chintalapudi, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Dr. Nageswara Rao said Manga’s body had been sent for post-mortem. Next course of action will be decided depending on the post-mortem report.

Eluru Lok Sabha member Putta Mahesh Kumar inquired about the incident. He asked the DMHO to initiate a detailed probe into Manga’s death and do justice to family members.
