VIJAYAWADA: The government of Andhra Pradesh has appointed Rajeev Ranjan Mishra, a retired IAS officer, as the head of a one-man commission to examine the classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs) in the state.

This decision follows the recent Supreme Court ruling in the State of Punjab & Ors. vs. Davinder Singh & Ors. (Civil Appeal No. 2317 of 2011), dated August 1, 2024, which allows sub-classification within SCs to ensure equitable distribution of reservation benefits among various sub-groups.

The commission's mandate is extensive, focusing on two primary objectives. First, it will analyse the representation of Scheduled Caste sub-castes across government departments and educational institutions, seeking to understand the current distribution and potential disparities in employment and academic opportunities.

Simultaneously, the commission will conduct an in-depth study of the social, economic, political and educational landscape of these communities, aiming to provide a comprehensive view of their current status, challenges and potential pathways for social and economic advancement.

Individuals and organisations interested in contributing to this study are invited to submit detailed memorandum and supporting documents. The commission has set a deadline of January 9, 2025, for document submissions.

Those wishing to participate in this process may submit their original certificates and relevant documents either in person at the tribal welfare department office in Vijayawada or via registered post. The office is open on working days from 10am to 5pm.
