AP Starts Power Generation from Sagar Right Powerhouse

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh has started generation of hydro-electric power from the Nagarjuna Sagar Right Powerhouse at the rate of 0.5 million units per day, taking nearly 5,500 cusecs of water from the dam.
At present, the Nagarjuna Sagar dam is getting inflow of nearly 3.5 lakh cusecs and this is expected to rise further by 5.5 lakh cusecs by Saturday. The water level at the dam stood at 546 ft with storage of 201tmc ft of water against the water level at FRL of 590ft -- with the maximum storage capacity of 312tmc-ft.
The dam is expected to reach the FRL in the next few days if the huge inflow of water continues to from Srisailam Dam. Hence, the AP Genco has started power generation from the Right Powerhouse from Thursday afternoon. The power generation was in full swing from Friday.
AP Genco said the water from the dam was being released into the Right Canal for cultivation of crops in its command areas of about 15 lakh acres in the districts of Palnadu, Guntur, Prakasam and Bapatla. They are using such water for generation of power at the Right Powerhouse.
They said the power generation would continue as long as the Nagarjuna Sagar dam gets adequate quantum of water.
Nagarjuna Sagar Right Powerhouse executive engineer YSRK Prasad said, “The dam is getting good inflow from upstream projects. For water to be released for cultivation, we started generation of power from Thursday and would continue with the process based on availability of water in the dam.The generated power is being sent to the state power grid.”
KRMB is likely to give permission to AP to avail 132tmc-ft of water from the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam through the Right Canal for cultivation in four districts, as the dam is expected to be full in the next few days.
