Visakhapatnam: A tribal man carried a new mother and another man carried the newborn across an overflowing stream before the pair could reach their home at Pinjara Konda village in Addateegala mandal of Alluri Seetharama Raju district on Friday.

All streams in the ASR district are swollen due to continuous rainfall over the past three days.

The scene of a woman and newborn being carried by others is, however, not new in agency areas, which suffer from inadequate roads and a lack of culverts.

Tribal men often carry pregnant women and the ill on dolis (makeshift stretchers).

In this instance, tribal woman Velugula Jyothika Reddy from Pinjara Konda village had delivered a baby at Yeleswaram Hospital in Kakinada district three days ago.

After being discharged, her family members had no choice but to cross the overflowing stream, walking along the ramp of the culvert. While crossing the stream, the water level rose several times. However, the men carrying the mother and baby never stopped.

A video of their perilous journey has gone viral on social media.
