The state Women’s Commission has initiated a suo moto investigation into the suspicious death of Karishma, a 17-year-old student at a madrasa here.

Commission chairperson Gajjala Venkata Lakshmi said, “We have ordered a thorough investigation. We wrote to the DGP seeking an in-depth inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Karishma's death."

Karishma, a resident of Angaluru in Krishna district, had been doing a three-year Arabic course at the madrasa for the past few months. On the day of the incident, the madrasa administrators informed her parents that she was unwell. They rushed her to a government hospital here, but she was declared dead on arrival.

The girl's parents and relatives expressed doubts about the cause of the death and refused to accept the body until clarity emerged. The police registered a case of suspicious death.

The women’s commission urged the Vijayawada city police commissioner to provide a preliminary report on the investigations so far.

In a separate development, the chairperson expressed serious concern over the recent assault and stripping of two women in Payakaraopet, Anakapalli district. She has written to the Anakapalli SP, seeking immediate action against the culprits and a report on the police actions.

"The government should respond seriously to such incidents and control attacks on women across the state," she said.
