TIRUPATI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to investigate claims of adulterated cow ghee used in the famous Tirumala laddus, following a Supreme Court directive spurred by a petition from YSRC leaders. A five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, including representatives from the CBI, Andhra Pradesh police, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The CBI’s SIT comprises key officials, including joint director S. Veeresh Prabhu and Inspector General Sarvashreshta Tripathi. The inquiry was sparked by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who cited a National Dairy Development Board report claiming that ghee from a Tamil Nadu supplier contained non-dairy fats like fish oil, beef tallow, and lard. In response, the state initiated its own inquiry, with an SIT led by IG Tripathi inspecting Tirupati facilities, including the Laddu potu (kitchen).
The CBI team will expand on the state police's preliminary findings. A joint review of evidence and documents is underway to build a comprehensive case, with FSSAI experts conducting on-ground inspections soon. The Andhra Pradesh government has requested additional support for the CBI’s team to ensure a thorough investigation, with close monitoring by the CBI Director.
A senior official highlighted the importance of coordination between state and CBI teams to ensure thorough scrutiny of all evidence. This collaborative review aims to enhance investigation efficiency and prevent any oversight.
