Visakhapatnam: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Gopinath Jatti, overseeing the Visakhapatnam Range, has initiated a 100-day action plan to curb ganja cultivation and trafficking in Andhra Pradesh. A comprehensive review meeting was held on Saturday, involving five district Superintendents of Police, to discuss the campaign’s key strategies. These include the establishment of specialised units to apprehend offenders, the setting up of checkpoints at strategic locations, and the initiation of preventive detention measures against known criminals.Since the campaign's launch, police have registered over 223 ganja-related cases, resulting in the seizure of approximately 9,517 kilograms of ganja valued at Rs 4.75 crores. A total of 545 individuals, including 249 from other states, have been arrested, and 155 vehicles used in trafficking have been confiscated.

DIG Gopinath Jatti expressed satisfaction with the campaign’s progress but stressed the need for sustained efforts to completely eradicate ganja from the state. The DIG has personally visited ganja cultivation sites in the Alluri Sitharama Raju District and has employed drones to monitor and detect illegal activities. To encourage farmers to abandon ganja cultivation, inter-departmental committees have been formed to promote alternative crops. So far, 8,585 farmers across 11 mandals have been assisted, with over 3.1 million silver oak plants distributed across nearly 4,500 acres.
