Visakhapatnam: The entire Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district recorded single-digit temperatures on Thursday, marking the lowest of the season. Dr. A. Appala Swami, Associate Director at the Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS) in Chintapalle, stated that mercury levels dipped below 10°C in several parts of the district. According to the Agromet Field Unit (AMFU), Dumbriguda recorded the lowest temperature at 8.6°C, followed by 8.7°C at G. Madugula and G.K. Veedhi, 8.8°C at Hukumpeta, 9.1°C at Araku Valley, 9.4°C at Chintapalle, 9.5°C at Pedabayalu, and 9.8°C at Paderu.
Other parts of Andhra Pradesh also experienced a notable drop in temperatures. Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district recorded 16.2°C, followed by 18°C at Jangamaheswarapuram in Palnadu district, 18.2°C at Nandigama in Krishna district, 18.5°C at Arogyavaram in Annamayya district, and 18.7°C at Anantapur.
Thick fog enveloped the agency area, reducing visibility to less than 100 meters, making commuting on the ghat roads challenging, locals reported. The falling temperatures have disrupted daily life in ASR district. Many residents prefer to stay indoors after sunset, while business establishments are opening late and closing early, said M. Chittibabu, a trader from Paderu.
The cold weather in ASR district suggests that December will bring even harsher conditions to many parts of the district and select areas of the state. Notably, on January 8, 2023, Chintapalle recorded a frigid 1.5°C, the lowest temperature of the season, as per RARS-Chintapalle. Despite the chilly conditions, the fog, cold air, and blooming Niger flowers in the valleys have drawn tourists from across the state and West Bengal.
