Vijayawada: The first flood warning has been issued at the Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at Dowleswaram when the Godavari river water level touched 11.75 ft with a discharge of 10.04 lakh cusecs into the sea at 10.15 pm on Thursday.

Water resources authorities say that the water level at the barrage is expected to rise further as the river’s upstream catchment areas and also the local sources are receiving huge quantum of rain water. The rising water will have its impact in the Agency areas and also island villages by causing inundation of low-lying areas affecting the habitations.

Moreover, with rising trend in the river, the flood duty officers will be put on alert to swing in to action if the water level rises further to keep a watch on the flood banks and to make efforts to strengthen them to avoid any chance of their breach.
