Visakhapatnam: Garbage has started piling up in the port city of Visakhapatnam as drivers of the Clean Andhra Pradesh (CLAP) garbage collection vehicles have gone on strike from Saturday.

They are boycotting their duties as they have not been paid salaries by Swayambhu, the contracting agency commissioned by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to provide drivers for their vehicles that collect and transfer garbage to the dump yards.
Sources confirmed that the bills raised by Swayambhu, which entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Swachh Andhra Corporation to provide drivers for CLAP vehicles, have not been paid by the VMC. Consequently, the contracting agency has not paid the CLAP drivers, who have gone on a state-wide strike from Saturday.

Visakhapatnam city produces nearly 700 metric tonnes of wet and dry waste per day.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, VMC in-charge Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Suresh Babu said the municipal corporation has hired 130 private tractors after the CLAP drivers have struck work. The tractors have started shifting garbage accumulating in the city to the dump yards, ensuring that garbage collection is not severely impacted by the strike.
