Kakinada: Kammas demonstrated their strength in Andhra Pradesh and decimated their rivals in this year's elections, its leaders claimed on Sunday.
The claim was made at the Kamma Maha Jana Sangham meeting here presided over by its state-level president Chundru Govinda Raju. State BJP president D Purandeswari, Rajamahendravaram Rural MLA Gorantla Buchaiah Chowdary and Mandapeta MLA Vegulla Jogeswara Rao were felicitated in the meeting.
The speakers said the five-year rule of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy caused fear among Kammas, but they wrested power from the YSRC with N Chandrababu Naidu taking the lead and forming the present government.
“We showed our community’s power with the help of other communities. Jagan Reddy had targeted our community and he paid a price for this by his disastrous defeat in the polls. He would remember for life the lessons the Kamma community taught him. There will be no future for Jagan Reddy,” the leaders asserted.
Purandeswari said her father and Telugu Desam founder NT Rama Rao had spread the fame of Kammas worldwide. Caste should not be used as a weapon for selfish ends. Each individual born should strive to improve the image of his caste as NTR did, she said.
“NTR, though he was born in the Kamma community, was a great inspiration to all castes. His services were not limited to his caste. We should strive to rise above caste considerations,’’ she stated.
Buchaiah Chowdary said he had been elected as MLA seven times only because of his Kamma community tag, but he also “got help from other castes and religions” to ensure his victory.
Jogeswara Rao said the Kamma community faced several hardships during the YSRC rule.
