Narsapur lace eighth Indian product to secure GI tag
Kakinada:The famous Narasapuram lace has bagged the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. It becomes the eighth Indian product to do so at the national level.
A GI tag indicates a product, which is from a specific geographical origin in the entire world. The product has certain qualities or reputation owing to that location.
Narasapuram lace getting the GI tag will greatly help thousands of artisans who make the lace products.
West Godavari district collector Chadalavada Nagarani will receive the GI certificate for the Narasapuram lace from the Development Commissioner for Handlooms at a function to be held in New Delhi on Monday. Union textiles minister Giriraj Singh and union minister of state Pubira Margheria will be present.
Nagarani expressed happiness over the Narasapuram lace products getting the GI tag. She pointed out that the traditional crochet lace craft of Narasapuram in the state has preserved its unique identity for centuries. World’s finest handcrafted crochet lace is produced in Narsapur.
West Godavari District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) project director M.S.S. Venu Gopal said there are nearly 15 exporters of lace products, which are produced by 51 societies in Narsapur. More than 8,000 people are directly or indirectly employed in the town’s lace park.
